One of the most iconic, public, exterior spaces in the city of Houston is the internationally renowned, 1986 Isamu Noguchi designed Cullen Sculpture Garden at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. The Cullen Family has now decided to extend this legacy by creating a unique garden space for the city at the University of Houston. As the new central core of the campus Arts District, the proposed urban garden fulfills the need for an elegant entrance to the campus and a unique place to further the university’s public identity. The Diversity Garden will provide a world-class space for the creative arts; preserve the old growth GROVE; and create a unifying landmark for the colleges of architecture, music, visual and performing arts.

The University of Houston is one of the most diverse universities in the US. The Diversity Garden originates in the desire to formulate a uniquely American garden in the 21st century. By creating an iconic Pavilion to house temporary public art installations, and an art curated drive-in which completes the fourth wall of the campus quadrangle; the garden will serve as a framing infrastructure for international artists to engaging students, the academic community, and the city of Houston.
