A corporate headquarters building in Chengdu, China, the project was built between a project by MADA spam and a project by P-A-T-T-E-R-N-S. The scheme is founded on an investigation of the three-dimensional opportunities for courtyards. The building is a stone clad cubic volume. A series of subtractive courtyards [both horizontal and vertical] perforate the mass of the building to allow light and ventilation into each room. Privileged programmatic pieces that house the ceremonial functions are then threaded back through the voids. Their figures protrude beyond the boundary of the ventilated figure. These pavilions are embedded throughout the section of the building and are clad in corten steel to accentuate their presence. The relationship of interior to exterior is consistently re-iterated through retractable walls, exterior balconies and large sunken fore-court. The building uses local materials and construction techniques to mediate its context. The building completed construction in 2010.
